Do crooked teeth keep you from living life to the fullest? Does your bite feel off? Are you continually holding back or hiding your smile from the world?

Having a beautiful smile is essential for your confidence and overall self-esteem, but the importance of pretty teeth goes far beyond cosmetics. Teeth alignment also impacts your oral health and plays a role in how well your jaw can do its job.

Treatment with Invisalign can return your teeth to proper alignment for optimum oral health. Plus, you get the added benefit of a straight and beautiful smile that you can be proud to show off! Invisalign can also be helpful for patients suffering from issues like bruxism (teeth grinding) or TMD (temporomandibular joint disorder). Aligning your teeth will protect them from the damage caused from a bad bite and help reduce the painful symptoms of TMD.

At Harmony Dental Wellness, we offer Invisalign in Northwest Austin, TX to preserve and enhance your smile.

Why does it matter if I have straight teeth?

In almost every case, straight teeth are healthier than crooked teeth. If you have straight teeth, you’re less likely to develop additional dental health problems than if your teeth are facing a bunch of different directions.  That means that you'll likely need less fillings, crowns and other dental work over time!

Crooked teeth are more difficult to brush and floss properly. Why? Because misalignment leaves more crevices, nooks, and crannies for food particles and bacteria to hide in. The more angles and directions you have to account for among your teeth, the harder it is to clean them.

When you can’t keep your teeth clean, your risk for developing issues like gum disease, tooth decay, and cavities increases. Misaligned teeth also affect the efficiency of your bite, which can cause problems like chipped or worn teeth, facial pain, tenderness when chewing, and jaw joint deterioration.

So, while straight teeth do benefit your looks and your confidence, the more important reason to keep your smile in line is so you can manage your oral health. If you’re struggling to keep a crooked smile healthy, treatment with Invisalign in Northwest Austin, TX can help you get your teeth into proper alignment.

How does clear aligner therapy work?

When you think of straightening your teeth, you’re probably envisioning having to wear unsightly metal brackets and wires. While a mouth full of metal is indeed the standard for traditional braces, clear aligners offer a more modern spin on classic orthodontics.

Our Austin Invisalign treatment utilizes a series of clear plastic aligners to gradually move your teeth into their best position. Each tray moves the teeth just a little bit. Because they are clear, the aligners are virtually invisible when worn.

These thin, plastic alternative to braces work the same way standard braces do: gradually pushing and pulling your teeth into alignment to create a straighter, healthier smile. The difference is that the trays cover your whole tooth allowing for precise positioning of your teeth, often in half the time of braces. You get to go through your orthodontic treatment without drawing unwanted attention to your teeth. Comfortable, flexible plastic trays take the place of bulky, cumbersome wires.

What are the advantages of Invisalign?

When compared to traditional metal braces, Invisalign clear aligners have many advantages. With Invisalign trays, you can:

  • Enjoy all your favorite foods, even the ones that are sticky, chewy, or crunchy
  • Remove your aligners for a significant life event or special occasion
  • Take photos without worrying about brackets and wires
  • Brush your teeth without worrying about missing spots or having stains from where the brackets were
  • Floss without needing an army of supplies
  • Receive thorough cleanings and dental exams from your Northwest Austin dentist without us having to work around braces
  • Have other dental work done during your treatment

To discover more ways that Invisalign can benefit your smile, schedule a visit at Harmony Dental Wellness.

Do clear braces hurt?

While you wear your Invisalign trays, you can expect to feel mild discomfort for the first few days of treatment while movement starts. The discomfort is easily handled with over the counter pain medicine, if needed. Many patients never feel the need to take anything for the discomfort!

It’s normal to experience temporary sensations of:

  • Soreness
  • Tenderness
  • Pressure
  • Tightness

These sensations will be most potent during the first few days after you progress to the next Invisalign aligner. The discomfort is typically much less than how it feels when you first have traditional braces tightened.

Your discomfort with Invisalign should only ever be mild, and we encourage you to manage your symptoms with over-the-counter pain meds like Tylenol. For most patients, Invisalign is more comfortable than traditional braces because there are no brackets or sharp wires with clear aligners.

Our Austin dentist, Sheila Farahani, is here to help make your Invisalign treatment go as smoothly as possible. If you ever have questions or concerns about pain or other symptoms from Invisalign, we encourage you to call Harmony Dental Wellness to speak with a clinical team member.

How often do I have to wear my Invisalign trays?

For effective treatment, dentists recommend wearing your Invisalign trays for at least 23 hours each day! That means you work, play, eat and sleep in them. The only reason your trays should come out of your mouth is to clean your teeth after eating or drinking.  The more compliant you are as a patient, the more successful your orthodontic treatment will be.

Dr. Farahani's advanced training and expert techniques allow her to see you less frequently than other dentists. If you would like to come in more often during your visit, we are happy to see you, but most patients enjoy less frequent visits.

Is Invisalign Right for Me?

Invisalign is an excellent choice for many patients, but not the best fit for everyone. To ensure that you’re a strong candidate for Invisalign, you’ll have an initial dental appointment with us before starting treatment.

As a new patient, you will find that Dr. Farahani spends extra time discussing your concerns and desires for your smile and your oral health with you. We also address lifestyle factors and habits that could be a consideration in achieving optimum wellness. We may recommend a FREE Invisalign video consultation if you are thinking about Invisalign to fix your bite, create a more beautiful smile or to optimize your health!

Dr. Farahani is excited to bring Invisalign to Harmony Dental Wellness. As a certified provider, AACA Fellow and national speaker for Align Technologies, she can help determine if this innovative treatment is right for your needs through an examination that includes a 3D scan, photos and x-rays of your teeth.

If you are moving forward with Invisalign, Dr. Farahani will use 3-D printing technology to create your treatment plan, and fabricate each set of your aligners. You will have the opportunity to preview your final smile with a video simulation!

Dr. Farahani is a rare find!  She looks for the underlying reason symptoms may be occurring instead of just treating symptoms and throwing a retainer at it.  Her entire staff is extremely friendly and professional.  I highly recommend this practice.

Frequently Asked Questions

At Harmony Dental Wellness, we offer Invisalign invisible braces for adult patients in Austin, TX who want to improve their health and the appearance of their smile. With over a decade of experience with Invisalign, Dr. Sheila Farahani uses clear aligners for orthodontics to address many of the same issues as metal braces—without the inconvenience.

  • Crooked teeth person putting on invisalign clear aligners
  • Tooth crowding
  • Overlapping teeth
  • Gaps and spacing issues
  • Overbites
  • Underbites
  • Crossbites

The first step is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Farahani at Harmony Dental Wellness in Austin, TX. She will perform a thorough evaluation that includes a 3D oral health scan, exam, and photos of your mouth. Based on the results, Dr. Farahani can determine if you are a good candidate for Invisalign treatment.

If you are, you’ll find that straightening your teeth with Invisalign is straightforward and convenient. We start by making a custom series of clear aligners for you that will gently guide your teeth into the desired position.

You will need to wear each set of aligners 23 hours a day for 1 week before switching to the next set. Remove your aligners to clean your teeth, and for special occasions, keeping in mind that the longer you wear them each day, the faster you will complete Invisalign treatment.

Since Invisalign aligners are removable, you can indulge in all your favorite foods. Brushing and flossing are easy because you don’t have to work around brackets and wires affixed to your teeth.

Our Munchie Madness protocol says that you should use your munchies to seat your trays EVERY time you place them in your mouth. Gently bite into the appropriate part of the munchie for 20 seconds per section of the mouth. It should take 1-2 minutes to seat your trays fully.

Munchie Madness is essential!! The #1 reason we see peoples teeth not tracking (and the #1 reason for refinements) is that people are not using their munchies!

If you are using a Munchie Vibe, please see our section on the Vibe under our FAQ's.

Since everyone who wants straight teeth comes to us with their own unique goals for their smile, Invisalign treatment times are different for everyone. On average, our patients spend between 6-12 months in treatment to achieve their best smile. Is your goal a cosmetic adjustment? Do you have bite problems we need to address? Are you a teen or older adult?

These are all questions we consider when discussing treatment with Invisalign at our Austin, TX dental office. With better technology than ClearCorrect or Smile Direct Club, Invisalign uses crystal-clear custom aligners to move your teeth millimeter by millimeter until they’re in the desired position. We can use Invisalign to make small cosmetic corrections or to address large orthodontic problems like overbites or underbites.

When Dr. Farahani discusses Invisalign with you, she’ll identify your goals and develop a plan for treatment to help you achieve them. You will receive several sets of customized aligner trays, and each should be worn every day for at least 22 hours for two weeks.

The number of sets of Invisalign aligners you receive depends on your individual needs; many of our patients use between 20 and 30 sets, while more complex cases may require as many as 50.

When your teeth are in their best position and you are ready to show off your new, healthier smile, you will be ready for retainers. Dr. Farahani may recommend removeable or permanent retainers. If you receive removeable retainers, you will need to start by wearing them all day for 2 months as if they were your last Invisalign aligner. After 2 months, you can reduce your wear to nighttime only! The commitment to retainers is for life. If you stop wearing your retainers, you teeth will shift and undo all of the hard work you put in to create your best smile. If you lose your retainers, don't panic! Give us a call and we can have a new set here for you in just a few days.

Every mouth is a little different and so the way each person puts in their Invisalign trays may be a little different. For most people, line up the tray on your two front teeth, press down to seat the front teeth, and then press down on the back to seat the rest of the tray. If that is too difficult, Dr. Farahani recommends lining up one side in the back first and then walking the aligner around from one side, to the front, to the other side until it is fully seated.
