What are the symptoms of TMD?

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is located on each side of your jaw and connects your jawbones to your skull. Your TMJ is a complex joint that works with muscles, ligaments, and cartilage to ensure proper jaw function. The TMJ enables you to chew, speak, laugh, and yawn.

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) occurs when your jaw is overworked or not functioning properly and affects the TMJ, causing joint and muscle pain in your jaw. This disorder inhibits your jaw’s natural movement and can cause numerous mild to severe symptoms, including:

  • Lockjaw
  • Headaches
  • Earaches
  • Sore or inflamed jaw muscles
  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Tinnitus, or ringing in the ears
  • Pain when chewing and opening or closing your mouth
  • Popping or clicking sounds when you chew, talk, or yawn
  • Neck or shoulder pain

Often, patients wear a removable nightguard while sleeping to ensure their jaw remains in the proper position. Though this is a conservative treatment, nightguards often relieve patients’ painful symptoms and heal the jaw joints.

Please call Dr. Sheila Farahani at our Austin, TX dental office if you are experiencing any TMD symptoms or discomfort in your jaw. At Harmony Dental Wellness, Dr. Farahani and our compassionate staff will provide you with comprehensive care and recommend the best treatment for you.
